Cyprus Government hopes substantial negotiations will yield concrete results

Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides has expressed hope and expectation that concrete results will come out of the substantive negotiations on the Cyprus problem that started on Tuesday, with a meeting between the negotiators of the two sides, Greek Cypriot Andreas Mavroyiannis and Turkish Cypriot Kudret Ozersay.

Invited by CNA to comment on the first meeting of the two negotiators in the framework of the phase of substantive negotiations, Christodoulides stressed the need for negotiations to take place in the framework of the joint communique, agreed by the leaders of the two communities, Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, on February 11, 2014.
“Today we submitted in writing our proposals on the property issue and the federal competences, the Turkish side submitted its proposals on the property issue and the federal public service and the two sides made preliminary remarks on the documents,” he added.
As regards the property issue, he added, it was agreed that a meeting of experts will be held on Friday to further explain the proposals of the two sides related to technical issues.
Christodoulides noted that on Tuesday, May 13, the negotiators will continue with the reactions of the two sides on the documents, and the Greek Cypriot side will submit the second part of its document on the property issue and the Turkish Cypriot side on the foreign affairs.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.
