AEL move six points clear at the top
AEL moved six points clear at the top of the table following a comfortable win over Ermis Aradippou and APOEL’s loss to Apollon in Limassol.
In the relegation scramble, all three candidates for the drop recorded easy wins and with two points separating them this may well be decided on the final day of the season.
Despite taking an early lead through Morais and seemingly in control of the game, champions APOEL collapsed for a second consecutive game especially after Apollon’s Abraham had levelled the score with a third of the game gone.
The same player scored the winner as he raced onto a long ball and beat APOEL’s keeper Pardo from close range with the visiting team’s defence in total disarray.
Apollon are just two points behind APOEL and have now sets their sights on the coveted second place that leads to Champions League qualification.
AEL took full advantage of their nearest rivals’ loss and despite missing a number of key players eased past Ermis Aradippou 2-0. Goals from Idanbdelay and a glorious strike from Monteiro were enough to give the Limassol team a much deserved win and send the travelling fans into a frenzy.
Omonia continued their fine form and ‘caught’ Ermis in fourth place after their win over Anorthosis. Goals from Alibio and Rubio gave Omonia a comfortable lead and all Anorthosis could muster was a late strike by Jorge.
In the second group Aris, Ethnikos Achnas and Doxa Katokopias recorded easy wins with the most impressive coming from Doxa who slammed four past group leaders Nea Salamina with Ramos getting a hat-trick.
As expected Aris trounced already relegated AEK Kouklion 7-2 with the Kouklia team surprisingly taking the lead twice in the first ten minutes.
In the final Group B game Ethnikos Achnas kept their chances of survival intact with a 2-0 win against AEK Larnaca with Aurelio opening the scoring from the penalty spot and Tall heading in the second.
