Speaking at his first press conference since being appointed interim manager, Giggs declined to answer questions on the sacking of David Moyes but did thank the former manager for giving him his opportunity in coaching.
After being introduced as “David” by United’s press officer, to laughter from assembled journalists, Giggs said: “I would like to go on record to thank David for giving me my first chance in coaching.
“I’ll always remember when he rang me and asked me and gave me my opportunity for a coaching role.
“I would like to say how proud I am to be managing for these four games at the club I have been supporting all my life and been associated with for 25 years. It is a proud moment for me and one I will always remember.”
Giggs said he was shocked to be asked to take over from Moyes.
Asked about his relationship with him he said: “It has been a difficult week for the club.
“It was a shock to me on Tuesday when I spoke to Ed [Woodward – United’s executive vice chairman]. He informed me David was leaving and asked me to take over. It has been a whirlwind week.
“It is the proudest moment of my career and one I am going to enjoy for two and a half weeks.
“I’m going to try and bring back some smiles on the faces of the fans, and look forward to the game on Saturday and prepare as best we can.”
Giggs’ first game in charge is on Saturday at Old Trafford against Norwich. He said he would try to return the club to its attacking philosophy, largely missing in a disappointing season.
He said he had not ruled out playing a part, joking he had awarded himself a five-year contract: “I’m using my power while I can.”
Giggs added: “It is going to be my philosophy, the Manchester United philosophy.
“I want the players to play with speed, tempo, be brave, show passion, work hard, all the things I expect of a Man U player.
“It has been a frustrating season for everyone, you win together and you lose together.
“These four remaining games I want to see goals, tackles, players taking players on, I want the passion that comes from being a Manchester United player.”
