The High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus in the UK Euripides Evriviades held a meeting on Wednesday with the Secretary-General of the London-based International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Koji Sekimizu, during which he presented his credentials as the country’s new Permanent Representative to the Organisation
In a private discussion Mr Evriviades conveyed the President of the Republic’s greetings to the Secretary-General. He also reaffirmed the continuous support by the Cypriot representation to the efforts undertaken by Mr Sekimizu in promoting the triptych of the international commercial shipping (safety, security and environmental protection) for a sustainable sector, through the collaboration of all the IMO member countries.
The High Commissioner highlighted the importance of the Cyprus Republic’s participation in the various bodies and committees of the IMO and above all on the Organisation’s Council.
The Secretary-General thanked Cyprus for its lasting and tireless support and said that the epicentre of his efforts is the ratification and application of the IMO’s international conventions. He added that all developments in world shipping must be carefully followed so that the IMO can respond accordingly. In these efforts the cooperation of the Organisation’s members, such as Cyprus, is considered essential, said Mr Sekimizu.
