Attorney General Costas Clerides has filed an appeal to the Supreme Court against the decision of the Limassol District Court to deny a police request to remand in custody the three suspects, members of far-right group ELAM, involved in the recent incidents in Limassol during a speech by the former Turkish Cypriot leader, Mehmet Ali Ali Talat .
According to a written announcement issued today by Attorney General`s office, regardless of whether the suspects are remanded in custody or not, police investigation has moved forward against these three persons and other persons into whether criminal offenses are committed and criminal prosecutions could be pursued.
It is also clarified that ELAM is not registered as a political party under the current law .An initial application for registration filed in 2010 had been rejected by the Interior Ministry because it did not meet the conditions of the then existing law on Polical Parties while a second application filed in 2011 was not examined because of some procedural gaps in the amending legislation which had been dopted . “
ELAM filed a new application for registration on 03.28.2014 the examination of which is pending with the Ministry of Interior
