Police in Paphos are working on a new plan to deal with the spate of burglaries and thefts in the district.
The past weekend alone saw six burglaries and thefts, mostly of homes in Peyia, Kissonerga, Yeroskipou and Paphos from which burglars made off with jewellery, money, iPads and electronic devices.
Two other burglaries were reported — at an opticians shop from which large quantities of goods were taken, as well as from the café of Ayios Neophytos Monastery. Thieves took drink and food – including beer, soft drinks, charcuterie and bottled water.
Police have not ruled out the possibility that all cases involve the same culprits.
Another theft was reported on Sunday afternoon, with a farmer saying that his entire avocado crop had been stolen from his field. Police are looking for an individual in relation to the case.
Yeroskipou mayor Michalis Pavlides said that the introduction of a Neighbourhood Watch programme had contributed to combating the problem of burglaries in his municipality.
And he urged residents to sign up to the scheme to help combat rising criminality. Paphos and Peyia Municipalities also run Neighbourhood Watch schemes, while Polis Chrysochous is considering adopting one too.
