More on the death and the CV of the Cyprus Defence Minister Tasos Mitsopoulos

Defence Minister Tasos Mitsopoulos passed away at 1330 local time (1130 GMT) on Saturday, according to an official announcement by his doctors at Nicosia General Hospital.

Mitsopoulos, 49, was married with two children.

Head of Nicosia Hospita Intensive Care Unit Theodoros Kyprianou said that  his health condition deteriorated further today and despite efforts he died at 1330.

“His family and Cyprus have lost an exceptional man, an excellent politician,” Health Minister Philippos Patsalis said.

The Cabinet will hold an extraordinary meeting at 1900.

Mitsopoulos was being treated at Nicosia General Hospital’s intensive care unit after a ruptured aneurysm on Friday caused extensive haemorrhage

Tasos Mitsopoulos was born in Larnaca on 30 May, 1965. He is married to Katerina Vati and has a daughter and a son. He studied Law at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and has been a professionally involved with the Democratic Rally (DISY). He speaks English and French.

Parliamentary term/activity:

He has served as an MP of the electoral district of Larnaca for the Democratic Rally from 2006 until his assumption of office as Minister in 2013. He has been deputy President of the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs and Parliamentary Representative of the Democratic Rally. He was a member of the Committee of Selection, the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs, the Ad Hoc House Committee on Rules of Procedure and a regular member of the Special House Committee on Declaration and Examination of Financial Interests.

He was also member of the House’s delegation in COSAC (Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs of Parliaments of the European Union) and member of the House’s delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean and an advocate on immigration issues.

 

Political career:

He was a member of the Democratic Rally’s Youth and the student organization Protoporia (1978-2000) as well as a member of the leadership of the Youth of New Democracy during the period 1988-1990.

He was elected vice president and secretary general of the Youth of the European People’s Party (EPP) (1989-1993) and served as special advisor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece (1989-1993).

He was also director of the office of Demetris Avramopoulos (1993-1995) and advisor of MEP Konstantinos Hatzidakis in the European Parliament (1995-1997).

He served as director of the Office of the President of the Democratic Rally (1997-2005) and as Spokesman of the Democratic Rally (1999-2008).

He was Secretary of Political Planning and Commissioner of European Affairs of DISY and head of the EPP’s Middle East Observatory.

He was a member of the Executive Bureau and the Political Bureau of DISY.

He served as Minister of Communications and Works from 1 March, 2013 to 14 March, 2014.

Tasos Mitsopoulos assumed his duties as Minister of Defence on 14 March, 2014.
