A 41-year-old man caught speeding at 204km/ph has been sentenced to 21 days in prison.
The Nicosia District Court said on Tuesday that the driver was also guilty of failing to stop when signaled by a police officer on the Limassol to Nicosia highway on September 30.
The motorist said his cousin had been taken ill and he was driving to see her when he was pulled over for speeding.
In addition to the sentence, the court gave the driver six points on his licence and a two month driving ban.
In handing down the sentence judge Marilena Miliotou warned that dangerous speeding was on the increase.
“Breaking the speed limit has very tragic results in the Nicosia district.”
