HARINGEY BOROUGH 3 ILFORD 2
Saturday 8th March 2014 – Essex Senior League
Borough’s decision to switch the match to their opponents stadium to be certain of it being played was narrowly justified thanks to a late winner after both sides had given away cheap goals. There was none of the sparkle which had shredded their midweek opponents in evidence and when Anthony McDonald opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a powerful 15 yard blast inside the keepers right hand post that was really the first incident of note with nothing having previously troubled either ‘keeper. Borough looked the more likely to increase their lead as Ilford could find no finish to complement some attractive approach play. Nine minutes into the second half Borough doubled their lead when the Ilford defence was slow to clear and Dewayne Clarke pounced to slam the ball into the roof of the net from close range. Borough ‘keeper Ashley Harris will be glad there is no video record of Musa Mennah’s straightforward soft shot which somehow eluded his clutches and trundled low into the corner to his left after 64 minutes. Encouraged by this success Ilford stepped up a gear and gave the Borough defence a severe test for a time and it was no surprise when they equalised after 76 minutes as Aaron Harriott finished a prolonged goalmouth scramble after a corner kick. Victory for either side then looked equally probable but it was Borough who netted the winner ten minutes from time when their best move of the match sliced through the Ilford defence and left Anthony McDonald to drive the ball home after the goalkeeper had left his line but failed to intercept the move.
