Gul is told that Cyprus is the biggest stumbling block to Turkey’s EU accession
The speaker of the Danish parliament, Mogens Lykketoft, told Turkish President Abdullah Gul that the Cyprus problem is the biggest obstacle to his country becoming a European Union member.
In a statement after a meeting with Gul in Ankara, Lykketoft said that a solution to the Cyprus problem is a precondition for Turkey joining the European Union.
He also noted that some of Turkeys negotiating chapters with the European Union are being blocked because of Cyprus.
Turkey’s negotiations with the European Union are being delayed because of its refusal to accord recognition to Cyprus, an EU member, which it invaded in 1974.
