Four people were rescued from a burning building this morning as firefighters tackled a blaze in Tottenham.

More than 20 firemen from four fire engines attended the scene in West Green Road, at around 3.30am, as flames engulfed the flats above a shop.

A man, who was suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation, was rescued from a second floor window.

Three further people – two women and a man – were also saved from a flat roof at the back of the block of flats.

All six people were treated on the scene for smoke inhalation and then taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service.

The fire caused serious damage to a staircase between the first and second floors of the flats, which are above a shop.

The cause of the fire is believed to be an electrical fault and the blaze was under control by 4.24am.

Watch Manager Steve Chase, from Tottenham fire station, who was at the scene, said: “The building was very smoky when we arrived but we were able to rescue the trapped people very quickly and safely.

“Firefighters did very well and got the fire under control swiftly.”
