Cyprus was among the 100 countries that voted on Friday in favor of a UN General Assembly resolution, affirming the Assembly’s “commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, political independence, unity and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders”.

Out of 193 UN member states, 11 voted against the resolution, 58 abstained and the rest did not attend.

Cyprus’ Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Nicos Emiliou, explained the vote by saying that Nicosia adheres to the EU declaration and the European Council conclusions of March 20.

He added that “Cyprus underlines the importance of respecting the fundamental principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of all states, including Ukraine”.

Emiliou said that a political solution is possible, based on the full respect of international law principles and obligations.

Such a solution should be promoted by all parties involved, the representative of Cyprus said.

He noted moreover that a solution to the crisis can be found through dialogue and called for self-restraint and de-escalation through diplomatic means.

The Ambassador referred to close Cyprus ties, both with Ukraine and Russia, and encouraged Ukrainian authorities to fully safeguard people’s rights belonging to different ethnic groups.

The new government should represent all Ukrainian citizens and their vision, Emiliou noted.

He urged authorities to conduct a probe on all acts of violence and encouraged Moscow to engage in a diplomatic solution.
