Cyprus government expresses appreciation to the US government for their close cooperation and coordination in the handling of the oil tanker “Morning Glory”.
According to a written statement, Government Spokesman Christos Stylianides says that the two countries coordinated their action on a diplomatic and operational level, leading to the safe removal of a “potentially dangerous load” carried by the tanker.
Stylianides adds that the Cyprus government acts always within the framework of international law and its international obligations, contributing to the consolidation of stability and security in the wider region.
US government contribution on this particular issue has been decisive, both for the security of the Republic of Cyprus and its citizens, as well as for enforcing international law, the announcement concludes.
The tanker, transporting stolen quantities of oil from As-Sidra port in Libya, was seized by US Navy SEALs, following an operation on Sunday evening, and is being returned back to Libya. The vessel was sailing outside the territorial waters of the Republic of Cyprus during the weekend.
