The authorities of the Republic of Cyprus are monitoring the course of a tanker, which is suspected of transporting stolen quantities of oil from the Sidra port of Libya.

According to a press release by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Republic of Cyprus, as well as other neighboring countries, received on March 11, 2014 a request by the Government of Libya to assist in the return of the stolen amount of oil from the port of Sidra in Libya.

The press release says that on March 14th, the tanker “Morning Glory”, suspected to carry the above oil cargo, was detected at 18 nautical miles from the Republic of Cyprus, in international waters.

It is noted that the tanker did not request for authorization to moor in a Cypriot port.

On Saturday, the 15th of March, the tanker “Morning Glory” changed its course in a southeasterly direction in international waters.

The competent authorities of the Republic of Cyprus are monitoring the course of the tanker in cooperation and coordination with third countries and the Libyan government, the press release concludes.
