Crowds gather outside Turkish Embassy in Nicosia for Berkin

The sad news of the death of 15 year old Berkin Elvan prompted groups including the Communist Labour Movement and the Cyprus Dev-Genc (Young Giants) to gather outside the Turkish Embassy on Wednesday.

Berkin, haplessly caught up in a skirmish between demonstrators and police, died of an injury caused by a gas canister fired by police which struck his head during the Gezi Park demonstrations in Istanbul last June.

Mourners carried banners which showed pictures of Berkin and slogans against the Turkish ruling park AKP and the Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan.

Yesterday, tens of thousands of mourners followed Berkin’s funeral in the heart of Istanbul.

The untimely death of the 15 year old boy, who had remained in a coma for 269 days, sparked outrage across Turkey.
