A man who is wanted by police on suspicion of attempted murder handed himself over to the authorities at Larnaca Airport on Monday night.
The suspect, Alexis Mavromichalis aka ‘Alexoui’, flew into Larnaca from Athens at 10pm and immediately handed himself in to the authorities who have an outstanding arrest warrant issued against him for attempted murder.
The attempted murder dates back to the night of February 28 when two men, Giorgos Zavrantonas and Koullis Koshiaris, were shot outside a restaurant in the Nicosia village of Peristerona.
Police rounded up several suspects in the aftermath of the shooting that left both men injured with investigators believing that it was carried out by Alexoui.
The case took a new twist when it was discovered that Zavrantonas, who had previously been in jail for attempted murder, was meant to be abroad under the witness protection programme after testifying against figures in other crimes.
According to a police spokesperson, 36-year-old Alexoui is wanted in connection with conspiracy to commit a crime, conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder and attempting to destroy property with the use of explosive substances.
The suspect is currently being questioned by police and is expected to go before a Nicosia District Court judge where investigators are set to request a remand period of eight days.
Alexoui is reportedly known as having close ties with underworld figures and has been in trouble with the law in the past.
