Main opposition party AKEL presented its candidates for the May 2014 European Parliament (EP) elections during a formal ceremony on Saturday.
The six candidates are Takis Hadjigeorgiou, former MP and current MEP, Stavros Evagorou, member of Parliament and former party spokesman, Neoclis Sylikiotis, former Interior minister and Energy minister, Vera Polykarpou, political advisor to the European United Left–Nordic Green Left (GUE-NGL), Haris Polycarpou, economist and Panayiotis Stavrinides, lector of Psychology at the University of Cyprus.
The candidates were named after a meeting of the party Central Committee on Friday and presented on Saturday morning. AKEL General Secretary Andros Kyprianou said that the party’s list of candidates is a mixture of experience, knowledge and new blood, adding that during these elections, the participation of everyone is more necessary than ever
