HARINGEY BOROUGH  2  BARKING  0

Tuesday 18th  March  2014    –     Essex Senior League

An open match with both teams prepared to attack in numbers nevertheless looked as if another goal-less stalemate might be on the cards as it remained level after ¾ of the game.   Much of that situation  was due to a fine first half performance by Barking ‘keeper Damos Horvath, who was with Borough last season.     The best of his saves was from a dipping Lee Allen long shot which he leapt backwards to tip over as it dropped.    Anthony McDonald was also frustrated when Horvath dived to push his accurate low shot just round the post. But to keep their goal intact Barking also needed two fine headed clearances from just under the bar .   Barking were a fast young and determined side but somewhat out-muscled physically especially in mid-field. Their  right winger Theo Ola’s neat approach work often posed problems for Borough’s defence but ‘keeper Ashley Harris who was in action less frequently than Horvath did well to scramble an early effort round the foot of a post and block a close range blast  in a melee when he was well off his line.   The breakthrough came in the 67th minute when a mix-up between ‘keeper and two defenders enabled Walid Matata to nip in and send a delicate lob just under the angle of bar and post and ten minutes from time the win was effectively sealed when a handball just inside the area enabled him to double the lead from the spot with a low shot just inside the ‘keepers left hand post.   There was little threat to either goal in the remaining period.
