The President of Cyprus and the Greek Cypriot side will not be lured into a blame game, Deputy Government Spokesman Victoras Papadopoulos said on Wednesday.
The President of the Republic has repeatedly proclaimed that he aims at relaunching a substantial dialogue the soonest possible, with good prospects for a successful outcome, Papadopoulos says in written statement, in response to statements by the Turkish Cypriot leader Eroglu and the Turkish Cypriot negotiator Ertug.
He adds that President Anastasiades is therefore insisting on reaching a common declaration that will outline the basic parameters of a Cyprus solution.
The Deputy Government Spokesman refers to the High Level Agreements of 1977 and 1979, UN resolutions, Cyprus’ full EU membership, and respect to the acquis, EU values and principles.
To this end, the President of the Republic has submitted a series of proposals, in order to create a new dynamic for engaging in a new dialogue for a final Cyprus solution, Papadopoulos goes on.
He says finally that despite obstacles set by the Turkish Cypriot side, the President will continue with consistency his efforts for a Cyprus solution that will put an end to the island’s anachronistic division.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third.
Repeated rounds of talks, under UN auspices, have yielded no concrete result.
Ahead of a new round of UN-sponsored peace talks, aiming to reunite the country under a federal roof, the Greek Cypriot side says a common declaration outlining the basic principles for a Cyprus solution was imperative.
