How important is exercise in your life? Or should I say, how important is exercise to your life, because a report this week in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) from a collection of scientists at three of the world’s finest bastions of further education – LSE, Harvard Medical School and Stanford University School of Medicine – suggests that exercise can be an even more effective cure for many serious illnesses than prescribed medicines (not that anyone’s suggesting giving up the pills in favour of an early morning run!).

This is something that 23 year old Nicholas Kyriacou, founder of mi fitness directory, has first-hand experience of and it totally changed his life.

In 2009 Nicholas found himself among the 1,600 people who are diagnosed each year with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, or Hodgkin’s disease as this cancer of the lymphatic system is commonly known. But rather than letting his condition stop him in his tracks, Nicholas picked himself back up and literally turned his life around. On the advice of his doctor, he started a regular exercise routine that became a fun pastime and eventually a passion, which he believes was central to the complete remission of his illness just six months later.
