Around 700 Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot employees at the British Bases plan a two-hour work stoppage on Friday to protest against what they claim are “unacceptable” austerity measures imposed by employers.
“The strike on Friday will take place between 6.45am and 8.45am and it is a warning. Unless the British Bases change their unacceptable stance we will go ahead with more drastic measures,” Christos Tziapouras, president of the coordinating committee said..
“Although the British government in 2012-2013 proceeded with pay increases for its civil servants due to positive trends in its economy, here employees at the British Bases are asked to suffer austerity measures implemented in Cyprus’ private and public sectors although they have not received any pay increases since 2006,” he added.
