Stefanos Charalambous, the young man whose racing career we’ve been following in the world of Karting, drove his last race in the Super One Mini Max category of his sport on Sunday at the Shenington circuit, with mixed results.
This was the last race of the season in the British Championship, and two weeks ago, in the dress rehearsal for this event, Stef won at a canter, leaving his rivals far behind him. This weekend, however, a series of events conspired to deprive him of the same success.
In time qualifying on the Saturday, he performed well, clocking the 5th fastest lap time. In his first heat, he started 5th as a result, and finished 2nd. In his second heat, however, misfortune meant that he was pushed back down to 11th. In the pre-final, he started in eighth, and clawed his way up to take the lead, only to be involved in an incident which pushed him back down to finish eighth. This meant a similar starting position on the grid for the final, and a tough race saw Stef finally manage to make his way up to finish 4th, just missing out on a podium position.
So Stef now moves up to the next category in the sport, racing throughout 2014 in Junior Max, in which he’ll drive his first race this coming weekend at the Paul Fletcher International circuit in the Lincolnshire countryside. We’ll continue to track Stef’s exploits as he progresses in the world of motor racing.
