Haringey Borough beat Basildon
BASILDON UNITED 1 HARINGEY BOROUGH 2
Saturday 12th October 2013 Essex Senior League
Borough won their points rather more easily than the score suggests – perhaps surprisingly so as their hosts started the game ahead of Borough and remain there despite losing although they are now only 2 points ahead of Borough’s 14 having played two games more. Borough enjoyed the greater share of possession in the first half but wasted the many half chances created. Anthony McDonald in particular gave the home defence a hard time down the left but could not force the ball home and the chances set up for others were wasted too. Dean Fenton blasted high over from a position close in and central defender Charles Douse – always a threat at set pieces – worked space for himself at a corner but sent his free header just over. Basildon created few dangerous chances in open play but might well have taken the lead with a free header from a corner but did go ahead against the run of play when Remi Sutton’s ferociously struck free kick from some 30 yards out on the right ended up low in the far corner even though Ashley Harris managed to get both hands on it. The second half was dominated throughout by Borough after Basildon had wasted early on what was to be their only real chance of the half as Greg Aptee burst clear down the middle but sent his low finishing shot inches outside Harris’s left hand post. For all their determination and pressure Borough still looked in danger of leaving empty handed until McDonald slotted home an equaliser in the 70th minute as he closed in from the right. But it took a penalty a few minutes later to secure the spoils and it is debatable if Fenton would have got his head to McDonald’s tempting cross from the left had he not been so blatantly pushed in the back that the referee had no option but to award the spot kick. Cedric Lakole blasted it home well to the right of ‘keeper Steve Brown even though he dived the right way. Borough looked comfortable throughout the remainder of the proceedings with the home side unable to produce anything to give Harris any concern.
