Cyprus ended a dismal qualifying campaign with a goalless draw against Albania at an empty GSP stadium in Nicosia last night.
Currently ranked 134th in the world, the national squad signed off from their 2014 World Cup qualifying group without conceding, but were unable to score.
In fact it’s been a year since Cyprus last scored in a qualifier.
Going into yesterday’s game, the island had picked up just one victory (1-0, Iceland) and a draw (0-0 Switzerland) in nine qualifying matches.
The one point from last night brings Cyprus to five points, leaving it firmly in last place.
Cyprus went into the match looking to salvage some pride, but spent most of the first half defending as Albania mounted repeated attacks on goal.
They came back fresher in the second half, but were unable to clinch victory. Stathis Aloneftis had a chance in the 58th minute while in 75th Yiorgos Efrem came close with a free kick.
