President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades has stressed that the basis of a solution of the Cyprus problem is defined by UN resolutions and EU principles and values.

President Anastasiades was asked to comment on a statement made by the Spokesman of the Turkish Foreign Ministry, according to whom the issues and parameters of the Cyprus problem are clear. The Turkish official also said that “we are not going to reinvent the wheel in Cyprus after fifty years.”

“I do not disagree with this,” he said and went on to draw a parallel between the Cyprus question and a car.

“If you want to put different size of wheels on a car, the only thing this will lead to is a road accident. This is why we are careful to ensure that the wheels we use are the ones the car manufacturer decides are the best for that particular car,” he explained.

In the Cyprus problem, he added, the solution should be found within the parameters defined by the UN resolutions on Cyprus and the EU principles and values.

The President’s statements were made after he had signed the Book of  Condolence for the late Wiflried Martens, at the Belgian Ambassador’s residence in Nicosia.

Cyprus has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. UN-led talks are expected to resume in the coming weeks with a view to finding a negotiated settlement to reunite the country.
