Apoel and Apollon both win last night
Apoel yesterday clinched a 1-0 victory over Aris, while Apollon managed a difficult but valuable 2-0 away win over Doxa Katokopia which was down to 10 men from the 32nd minute.
With 12 points, Apollon now share top spot with Anorthosis and Ermis. APOEL has 10 and is fifth. Under caretaker coach and former football legend Yiannis Ioannou, APOEL was able to bounce back from an embarrassing defeat last week to clinch three points thanks to a goal in the 13th minute by Nuno Morais.
Still smarting from a 0-3 hammering from Eintracht Frankfurt at the GSP and with management still looking for a coach, APOEL went into the game keen to make amends.
It was able to score early on when the Portuguese midfielder pushed in the ball after a melee in front of goal. There was plenty more action in front of goal, but APOEL was unable to dent the dogged defence mounted by the Limassol side with goalkeeper Zoltan Kovacs making several saves.
At the Makarios Stadium on the other side of Nicosia, Doxa battled but was unable to stave away defeat from Apollon, fresh from a stunning away win against Legia Warsaw.
Daniel Habber scored the first goal in the 73rd minute, four minutes after coming on and helped create the second, scored by Fotios Papoulis in the 82nd.
Doxa had opportunities to score, but faced tough odds after Pedro Baquero was sent off in the 32nd.
