In Cyprus today October the 1st they celebrate independence day it is a national holiday. It is celebrated usually by festivals at the schools and a large military parade in the capital. Cyprus became independent from the British in 1960.

To save money and help the poor there will be no tanks or armoured vehicles on display at the Independence Day parade this year . Funds usually spent on the October 1st military parade to celebrate the independence of Cyprus will this year go towards feeding needy school children. Defence Minister Fotis Fotiou  announced that money spent on exhibiting tanks and other military hardware in the parade will instead be used to boost the government’s efforts to provide disadvantaged children with free breakfasts at schools
