DOXA upset Anorthosis
Doxa Katokopia turned giant slayer yesterday, ending Anorthosis’ unbeaten run with a decisive 2-1 victory, while Ael Limassol escaped from the GSP with one point after holding Omonia to a goalless draw.
In other games AEK clinched its second victory this season, defeating Enosis neon Paralimniou 2-0 at the GSZ. This was the fourth defeat for Paralimni. Koullis Pavlou opened the score with a penalty in the 10th minute and Magralesvili made it 2-0 on the 36th.
And in Limassol, Aris and and Ethnikos Achnas each won a point after a 1-1 draw. Ethnikos went ahead with Liliou on the 22nd minute only for Ethnikos to equalize on the 83rd.
Anorthosis Famagusta, playing at home at the Antonis Papadopoulos, was unable to make it four out of four. Instead, the refugee club found itself overwhelmed by smaller Doxa.
Elias Charalambous opened the score with a header in the second minute, while Anorthosis scrambled but failed to regroup, finding itself two goals down after Ricardo Fernandez scored from a free kick..
Anorthosis was able to pull one back with Fofana in the 58th minute, but despite besieging the Doxa goal was unable to rescue a point. Doxa was down to 10 men after Leonardo was sent off in the 87th minute.
The defeat, the first this season, pushed it down to joint second place with Apollon Limassol which on Saturday
In yesterday’s other big game, visiting Ael Limassol managed a goalless draw against Omonia at the GSP, even after it was down to 10 men when its goalkeeper was sent off in the 55th minute.
Though this was Ael’s first loss of points, the draw combined with Anorthosis’ defeat, was enough to propel it to first place with 10 points. The game was played behind closed doors
On Saturday, an unconvincing APOEL Nicosia was able to bring three points back from its away match to Salamina with a narrow 1-0 score thanks to Mario Sergio in the 45th minute. Salamina put on a strong display and it was only thanks to an impressive performance by APOEL goal keeper Urko Pardo that the Nicosia side were able to snatch a valuable away victory.
Also on Saturday Apollon defeated Alki 2-1, its third victory this season. Guyon opened the score in the third minute. Marios Charalambous drew one back in the 24th only for Apollon to clinch victory with Haber in the 36th.
