President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, gave a speech in New York at the prominent think tank Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), during which he referred to his positions on the Cyprus problem and the efforts to prepare well for the resumption of the talks as well as to the measures taken for economic recovery. He was welcomed by the President of CFR, Mr Richard Haas, who has previously served as former US President Donald Reagan’s envoy on the Cyprus problem. CFR members had the opportunity to pose questions to the President of the Republic covering a wide range of issues such as the repercussions from Eurogroup’s decision on Cyprus and the present phase of the economy, energy matters and the prospects emanating from the discovery of hydrocarbons, the Cyprus problem and Turkey’s role, and Cyprus-Israel relations. Furthermore, President Anastasiades had a meeting with members of the editorial team of the New York Times, whom he thoroughly briefed on the Cyprus problem and his initiatives for the resumption of the talks. They also discussed energy matters, the economy, and issues regarding the wider region of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. Also present at the meeting were the Government Spokesman, Mr Christos Stylianides and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Ioannis Kasoulides.
President Anastasiades also hosted a working lunch for the representatives of the five Permanent Members of the Security Council of the United Nations – China, Russia, France, United States and Britain. During the lunch he outlined his positions on the Cyprus problem and elaborated on his proposal regarding Famagusta. Attending the lunch were also the Foreign Minister, Mr Kasoulides, the Government Spokesman, Mr Stylianides, Cyprus’ Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Nicos Emiliou and other officials.
On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly the President of the Republic had a bilateral meeting with the President of Panama, Mr Ricardo Martinelli, with whom he discussed the avoidance of double taxation and collaboration in the shipping sector.
In the evening President Anastasiades and his spouse attended the reception hosted by the US President in honour of the Heads of State and Government who are in New York to participate in the 68th session of the General Assembly.
The President also attended a dinner with Archbishop Demetrios of America and members of the Greek overseas community who had responded to Archbishop Demetrios’ call to support the Cyprus Solidarity Fund with contributions of over 100,000 US dollars.
