Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties have urged the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus to prepare the resumption of direct negotiations and work intensively for a viable and comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem, the Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to Cyprus, Oksana Tomova has said.

Reading the joint communiqué after the meeting of the parties at Ledra Palace, in the UN controlled buffer zone, she said the leaders and the representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties met on Wednesday for their regular meeting and expressed opinions on the issue “Restarting of the negotiations – Possibilities for comprehensive solution” as proposed by the hosting party AKEL.

They reassured their will for a solution of the Cyprus problem the soonest possible, she added. “A solution based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation, based on the UN resolutions and the high level agreements of 1977 and 1979, with political equality as described in the relevant UN resolutions”.

The current status quo is unacceptable, the Ambassador said, adding that “the parties will strengthen their efforts in order to help as much as they can the effort to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem”.

The next regular meeting of the political parties will be held on the 23rd of  October.
