The holy flame from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem was flown to Cyprus on Saturday afternoon as Cypriots prepared to celebrate midnight Easter mass.
The flame was flown to Cyprus aboard a special flight and given the reception of a head of state at the old Larnaca Airport.
There to welcome it were the Bishop of Kitium Chrysostomos, the Ministers of Defence and Communications Photis Photiou and Tassos Mitsopoulos, a guard of honour and the police band, as well as other officials.
The flame was lit at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, traditionally believed to be the burial site of Jesus Christ, during the ceremony earlier on Saturday (photo).
Thousands are expected to flock to churches across the island this evening for the Easter midnight mass celebrating the Resurrection of Christ.
