Α government plan to save Cyprus Airways has to be implemented by the end of the month. Under the terms of this arrangement, 560 employees will be laid off, cutting personnel by half. There will also be a horizontal 8 percent reduction in salaries with four aircraft ceasing to operate.
Cyprus Airways CEO Stavros Stavrou said that if the political decision to save the national carrier had not been reached yesterday, collapse was certain. Stavrou made clear that 360 employees have to be laid off effective immediately while 200 will need to go by the end of the month.
Head of union SYNYKA SEK Andreas Pieridis said that certain issues need to be clarified with the government, such as the fate of providence funds and noted the fact that the plan dramatically increased the number of lay offs.
The head of the pilots union Petros Soupouris said that the proposal is hard to take, adding that the union will convene tomorrow and decide on whether to support the plan. He added that before any lay offs take place, the management should resign en masse.
