Motion in support of Cyprus proposed by Councillor Barry Evangeli followed by a contribution in amendment by Councillor Brian Coleman was voted in last night (Tuesday 16.4.2013) during a Barnet Council Meeting.
The Council notes the challenging financial circumstances currently faced by Cyprus. Council believes the resultant attacks by the EU on people’s savings accounts are truly awful and constitute a seriously worrying turn in the response to Europe’s ongoing economic crisis.
The motion notes that this situation is of great concern to the Borough’s Cypriot community and welcomes the Treasury’s decision to implement a UK protection scheme in support of depositors at the UK Laiki branches and thanks local Conservative MPs for helping to this end.
Councillor Coleman’s amendment refers to the election of Nicos Anastasiades to the presidency of Cyprus and requests the Mayor to send him a letter of support as he attempts to resolve his country’s difficulties, as well as greetings to the Mayor of Barnet’s twin town of Morphou and its citizens of the Council’s best wishes at this difficult times.
And the motion concludes by encouraging Borough residents to provide practical support to Cyprus by considering taking their holidays on the beautiful island which provides excellent value for money and constant good weather.
