Pambos Christodoulou has been unveiled as the new coach of Anorthosis Famagusta until the end of the season.
Christodoulou, 45, made waves across Cyprus last season after guiding AEL to the league title for the first time since 1968 and establishing himself as one of the most successful Cypriot coaches of all time.
The former AEK and Doxa forward has also had successful spells at Olympiakos Nicosia and Doxa – where he first moved into management back in 2006.
Speaking to reporters during a news conference at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium on Wednesday, he said, “I have come to the most historic club in Cyprus, to a team that has high targets. Despite the recent unsuccessful results, Anorthosis remains in contention for the league title…I have agreed to take charge until the end of the season. I have not come here for the money. I am inspired to be taking charge of this team and to be amongst the fans. I know what the club means to the fans. I know what its like to be playing at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium.”
Apart from winning the league title, Christodoulou also managed to take AEL into the group stages of the Europa League this season where they managed to pick up four points after a 0-0 draw with Borussia Monchengladbach and a resounding 3-0 win over Marseille.
But midway through the campaign, Christodoulou and club chairman Andreas Sophocleous reportedly clashed over his contract resulting in Christodoulou being shown the exit door and he was swiftly replaced by former Porto captain Jorge Costa.
Anorthosis appeared on course for their first league title since 2008 when they lead the league standings by six points.
But a poor spell in the last couple of months has seen them fall six points behind new leaders APOEL with six games left to go in the end of season playoffs.
Christodoulou’s predecessor Ronny Levy was fired by the refugee club after last weekend’s 2-0 home defeat to APOEL.
Anorthosis take on AEK this weekend while APOEL face Omonia in the Nicosia derby.
