Akel General Secretary says the memorandum must be referred to parliament for debate and voting
AKEL General Secretary Andros Kyprianou stressed that if the government respects democratic institutions, then it is obliged to refer the memorandum to parliament for debate and voting.
He further described the finance minister’s position that such an action cannot take place, as a joke.
Commenting on a memorandum clause on the possibility of selling gold reserves to cover public debt deficits, Andros Kyprianou said that decisions on the issue were reached without the Central Bank Governor and political parties being informed.
Prior to his departure for Strasburg where he will take part in the European parliament debate on the Cyprus memorandum, he said that during the debate he will also convey the President’s position on the support of the country from the EU coherence funds.
The AKEL General Secretary will hold talks with European Parliament President Martin Schultz and the leaders of political party groups.
