Two beaches in Cyprus have been included in a pilot project entitled “greener beaches”.
The pilot project was implemented at two of Cyprus’ most favourite beaches in the Famagusta district, namely the “Fig Tree Bay” and the “Nissi Beach”.
According to a questionnaire, the results of which were presented Tuesday, visitors of the two beaches said that the pilot project had made the beaches even more attractive.
The project is part of a number of projects which make up a unique five year destination partnership between the Cyprus Tourism Organisation, the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative and the Travel Foundation, with the aim to `green` some of Cyprus` beaches.
In addition, the aim of the project is to demonstrate what a best practice ‘green’ beach could look like through the implementation of recommendations from an earlier feasibility study.
Two beaches were involved with the pilot project: Nissi Beach in Agia Napa and Fig Tree Bay in Protaras.
Julie Middleton, head of the Industry Partnerships of the Travel Foundation, said that the project aims “to cement Cyprus’ reputation as a destination of sustainable tourism excellence”.
President of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation Alekos Orountiotis said that 57 Cypriot beaches fulfill the criteria of the European project called “Blue Flag” and are part of the most attractive beaches in the Mediterranean.
The Blue Flag is an exclusive eco-label awarded to over 3200 beaches and marinas in 36 countries across Europe, South Africa, Morocco, New Zealand, Canada and the Caribbean.
