MEMBERS of the public struggled to revive a new mother who died after she was thrown from the bonnet of a car into a zebra crossing light in New Barnet yesterday evening.
Christie McHugh is believed to have been killed following an incident with another driver in East Barnet Road at around 6.30pm. Murder detectives are investigating the incident.
Mrs McHugh, who had a 5-month-old daughter and a five-year-old son with her husband John, was said to be a much-loved member of the New Barnet community.
Paul Lawrence, landlord of the Lord Kitchener pub on East Barnet road paid tribute to the mother, who was in her 30s.
He said: “It is such a sad and tragic loss, and my condolences go out to every one.
“She was lovely. A brilliant bubbly person who with two lovely kids.”
Police and ambulance services were called to the East Barnet Road at around 6.40pm to reports of a woman suffering head injuries.
Before they arrived a member of the public was seen administering a heart massage to a woman on the ground.
Mrs McHugh, who worked as a personal assistant, was thrown from bonnet of a car into a Belisha beacon – the lights which sit on the pavement next to a zebra crossing.
Paramedics pronounced Mrs McHugh, who is yet to be formally identified, dead at the scene.
Efkan Kilic, 21 was working in New Barnet Fruit and Veg in East Barnet Road at the time of the accident when he heard shouting.
“I think her husband was there. Before the paramedics came someone was doing a heart massage.”
Police arrested a woman at an address in Barnet in connection with the incident. She is now in custody at a north London station. A Vauxhall Insignia has been recovered.
Mrs McHugh worked at Luxx Light Technology in High Street, High Barnet as a personal assistant to director George Leonidou, who said the office was in shock.
“We’re finding it very difficult to function,” he said. “We are lost without her. Absolutely lost. She was a fabulous person. The most conscientiousness worker I have ever had and a friend.”
Flowers have been left at the scene.
A post-mortem will be scheduled in due course.
