Police released a CCTV image showing a couple officers are hoping to trace.
The victim was approached by a man and a woman in the Tesco car park in Mutton Lane.
They told him he had dropped some money.
Although the victim was unsure of this, the pair convinced him it belonged to him and he took the money and went to his car.
But the thieves then followed him and asked for the cash back.
As he reached for the cash, his wallet was snatched and a credit card was taken.
The card was then used at three different cashpoints in the area.
It happened on Monday, February 18 at around 4.45pm.
PC Ruth Cash, investigating, said: “Firstly I would appeal to anyone who recognizes the two people pictured to contact me.
“I would also be interested in hearing from anyone who may have witnessed what happened to call with information.
“It is possible there have been other incidents of this nature in the area and I would ask any other potential victims to contact me. It is also important for people to call police immediately if they are approached in this way.”
Anyone with information can contact PC Cash via the non-emergency number 101, quoting crime reference number J3/13/162.
