New President at the Cyprus Presidential Palace

The newly elected President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades arrived in the afternoon at the Presidential Palace, immediately after  his swearing in ceremony which took place at the House of Representatives.

Anastasiades who was accompanied by his spouse Antri and his grandson Andy was welcomed at the entrance of the Presidential Palace by the outgoing President Demetris Christofias and his spouse Elsi Christofias.

Their meeting at the Presidential Palace lasted about half an hour.

Leaving the Presidential Palace, after handing over the reins to the new President, the outgoing President wished him “a less hot chair”. He also wished the First Lady to have patience, as the First Lady “always bears great responsibilities”.

He also sent a message to the people of Cyprus saying that “they have my absolute love and respect. They made their choice. History will speak for all of us”.

Nicos Anastasiades, President of the right wing Democratic Rally (DISY) party, won Sunday the Republic of Cyprus’ presidential elections with 57.48% of the vote, in the run-off election. His rival Stavros Malas, backed by left wing AKEL party, secured 42.52%
