Natural gas a great prospect for Cyprus’s future

Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism George Lakkotripis featured here Monday, natural gas as a great prospect for the future of Cyprus.

He also assured that no planning will change concerning the exploitation of the energy resources of Cyprus.

In statements to the Press on the occasion of the national anniversary of the 25th of March, Lakkotripis said that natural gas is a great prospect for the future of Cyprus and we must all behave responsible and examine all those moves that would bring better days to the country.

Asked about the second confirmatory drilling which is due in June, Lakkotripis said “that nothing has changed, no planning has changed with the companies which have signed the contracts”.

He added that he had a meeting with the representatives of the companies last week and they confirmed their positive plans.

Concerning tourism, Lakkotripis reminded that last week he was in Moscow and indicated that the summer season is specified as “very good”.

He added that ways should be found so as to convince tour operators that the situation of Cyprus has been stabilized.

He assured lastly that his Ministry seeks ways to reduce the price of electricity and that he has asked CERA to prepare a relative study.

On January 24, Cyprus signed contracts with the ENI/KOGAS consortium for hydrocarbons exploration in blocks 2, 3 and 9 in the EEZ of Cyprus, while on February 6 it signed hydrocarbon exploration contacts with French TOTAL for blocks 10 and 11.
