Education and Culture Minister Kyriakos Kenevezos has expressed hope that the 21st century will vindicate the struggles of women.

In a message on the occasion of International Women’s Day, Kenevezos said that “undoubtedly the contribution of women in all fields of social activity has been great”, adding that “nowadays we can be proud that the once understated position of women has now been significantly improved as a result of women’s struggles”.

“On other hand, we regret that millions of women throughout the world are victims of oppression, discrimination and exploitation”, he added, noting that “today we honour the women of the 1955-1959 liberation struggle in Cyprus against the British colonial rule, the heroic mothers and relatives of persons missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion, the heroic teachers in the island’s northern Turkish occupied areas and the women who are struggling to maintain peace in our island and are fighting to return to the land they were born”.

Their patriotism, he added, is an example for all to continue the struggle until the liberation of the country, adding that “respect and appreciation should also be directed to all women, scientists, sports women, farmers, politicians, teachers, students and pupils”.
