The Cyprus problem and the economic developments in Cyprus were at the focus of a telephone conversation held between President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and US Secretary of State John Kerry.
According to a spokeswoman of the US Secretary of State, the conversation took place on the 16th of March, and the US official congratulated President Christofias on his election.
“The Secretary also talked to him about the importance of trying to get back to advancing a settlement on the island, so they can get to the talks about a bizonal bicommunal federation”, Victoria Nuland said.
“We continue to support a Cypriot led negotiation process under the UN good offices to reunify the island in a bizonal bicommunal federation”, she noted.
She added that they also talked about the economic situation, “which the Secretary made clear we are monitoring closely”.
As regards energy matters, she said that the United States “supports Cyprus’ right to explore for energy in its off-shore areas”.
“We believe that the island’s gas resources and all of its resources should be equitable shared in the context of an overall settlement. But again these are decisions that have to be made with all these factors in mind”, Nuland concluded
