Shipment of foodstuffs containing horsemeat blocked in Cyprus

A public health department official today said that checks have comfirmed that no horsemeat hamburgers are being sold in Cypriot supermarkets.
He said that checks are currently being carried out on lasagne and other meat products.
The official said that an importer of frozen meat products carried out a check and blocked a shipment of foodstuffs containing horsmeat.

He said that any risks to health from horsemeat consumption may come as a result of some substances administered to horses.
The possibility of consumming horsemeat disguised as beef has caused outrage in Britain and a minister has blamed it on an international criminal conspiracy.
Britain and France have vowed to punish those found responsible.
Six  big French retailers have announced they were recalling lasagne meals and other products suspected of containing horsemeat.
