President elect Nicos Anastasiades – CV

The newly-elected President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, was born in Pera Pedi village, in Limassol District on 27 September 1946.

He has studied Law at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and his postgraduate studies are in Shipping Law at the University College London of the University of London.

A founding member of the Democratic Rally (DISY) and its Youth Organisation (NEDISY) in 1976, Anastasiades has served as Limassol District Secretary of NEDISY (1976-1985), vice-president (1985-1987) and President (1987-1990) of NEDISY.

He has also served as first Vice-president of DISY (1990-1995), Deputy President of DISY (1995-1997), and President of DISY since 1997.

He was elected in Parliament as the Representative of Limassol constituency under the banner of DISY 1981-1991, under the banner of the DISY-Liberals Coalition 1991-2001 and under the banner of DISY since 2001.

Anastasiades has served as Deputy Parliamentary Spokesman of the DISY-Liberals Coalition (1991-1993) and Parliamentary Spokesman of the Coalition (1993-1997), Deputy President of the House of the Representatives (1996-2001) and member of the Committee of Selection, Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs as well as leader of the delegation of the House to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) (1991-2011).

He was also vice-president of the Executive Committee of the Cyprus Group to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians (1990-1996). Anastasiades has also served as First Vice-president of the delegation of the House to the EU-Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) and has been the Leader of the delegation of the House to the Association of Asian Parliaments for Peace [Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) since 2008] as well as leader of the delegation of the House to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) and leader of the delegation of the House to the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (EMPA) (Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean since 2010).

He is currently leader of the DISY parliamentary group, member of the Committee of Selection, leader of the delegation of the House to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), member of the delegation of the House to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean and of the delegation of the House to the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA).

He has participated in the highest collective bodies of the European People’s Party, of the European Democratic Union and of the World Democratic Union.

He is also a member of the National Council, the supreme advisory body to the President of the Republic on the Cyprus problem, since 1995.

Nicos Anastasiades is married to Andri Moustakoudes and has two daughters.
