Chief of Police Michalis Papageorgiou has said that increased security measures will be in place for the investiture of the new President of the Republic, at “Eleftheria Stadium” in Nicosia, and for the celebrations of his supporters.
In statements to the press, Papageorgiou called on everyone to proceed to the venue calmly and celebrate in a civilised manner.
The Chief of Police noted that the doors to the stadium would open at 1830 to let the people in, and that the people should follow Police instructions.
Due to the fact that the stadium would only be able to accommodate up to 7,000 persons, there would be large screens for those outside the stadium.
Replying to questions, Papageorgiou said that voting was proceeding smoothly so far and that policing would continue.
The election result is expected to be announced around 20.00 local time (18.00 GMT)
