Cyprus President elect to be sworn in on February 28
Nicos Anastasiades, who was elected President of the Republic of Cyprus in Sunday’s second round of presidential elections, will be sworn in on February 28, during a special session at the House of Representatives.
Director General of the House Socrates Socratous told CNA that House President Yiannakis Omirou may deliver a speech before the ceremony, and that after the ceremony Anastasiades will be addressing the House.
The state, political and religious leadership of the country, as well as foreign ambassadors, will be invited to attend the ceremony, in the presence of outgoing President Demetris Christofias.
Socratous said it was customary for the new President to visit the House President’s office and then the outgoing President to do so, before the plenary session. When the ceremony is over, the new President goes to the House President’s office to receive the congratulations of the parliamentary groups. Afterwards, the outgoing President goes to the Presidential Palace, where he awaits the new President, to whom he hands over the reins of the state and departs.
