The Turkish Foreign Ministry document on the foreign policy of Turkey in 2013 reveals the great dangers lying ahead for Cyprus and the prospects of the struggle for a solution and reunification, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has said.

Stephanou noted that the document “highlights as one of Turkey’s goal to change the process on the Cyprus problem provided by the UN resolutions and to achieve a settlement of the Cyprus problem through a four-party conference, which will certainly not be based on the Security Council resolutions.”

He added that “both a new process and extended negotiations, as well as a policy on the Cyprus problem which will be initiated from scratch facilitate Turkey to promote and implement its goals on the Cyprus problem, which aim at the division of the island.”

“It is for this reason exactly that we must insist and remain consistent with the UN resolutions, which determine both the essence of the settlement and the process which must be followed to reach a settlement as provided by the UN resolutions”. This, he added, “is a settlement providing for a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, as provided by UN resolutions, a settlement providing for a state with a single sovereignty, a single citizenship, a settlement that will restore and safeguard human rights and fundamental freedoms of all the people”.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.
