10.18% of the adult population of Cyprus suffers from diabetes, according to the latest report from the International Diabetes Federation. The corresponding average in Europe is 8.4% (and 8.3% worldwide).
Overall it is estimated that 83,810 residents of Cyprus have the disease, and the federation estimates that about 34,000 of them do not know they are diabetic. Of the total, 57,900 are men and 25,910 women. The majority of these are aged 40 to 59 years, with the vast majority, namely 62,050, livong in the major urban centres of the island.
Deaths due to illness in 2012 totalled 470. The health expenditure per patient per year just gone too amounted to $ 2,163.
Research by the federation shows that in Europe there are 55 million people with diabetes, a number that is forecast to rise to 64 million by 2030. On the continent 622,144 people lost their lives due to the disease in 2012 and a total of €139b was spent treating them.
