Police arrested 33 people in the early hours of Saturday morning in Pyla after an illegal gambling raid. According to Larnaca Police Spokesman Christos Andreou, CID investigators also seized eight poker tables, two roulette wheels as well as the cash sum of €4,500 from a shop in the village which is known for its joint Greek Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot community. “Between the hours of 2.30am and 6am, various police departments in Larnaca obtained search warrants and entered the premises of a store in Pyla where 22 people were gambling illegally. Another 11 people, believed to be personnel, were also arrested and taken to Oroklini Police Station where they were formally charged and then released. The raid was part of a nationwide clampdown on illegal gambling ordered by the police chief during the Christmas holidays.
