A solution to the Cyprus problem will be a remedy to the economic crisis, leaders and representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot Political Parties have agreed, during their regular meeting hosted by the Embassy of Slovakia at Ledra Palace.
According to a joint communiqué issued after the meeting, the parties expressed opinions on the issue “How to ensure that the new negotiation process in Cyprus talks leads to an early solution” as proposed by the hosting party the Turkish Cypriot Republican Turkish Party (CTP).
In the communiqué it is stated that all the parties should recognize that there is no perfect solution for anybody and a mutually accepted solution could only be found by give and take based on UN resolutions and parameters.
“Pro-federal solution powers should join forces for an early settlement. In 2013 both leaders should be supported and encouraged to engage in result oriented process”, the statement reads.
The next regular meeting of the Leaders and the Representatives of the Political Parties will be held in January 2013.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The latest round of UN backed talks began in 2008 with a view to reunite the island under a federal roof.
